A Brief History of Slots:

When it comes to the modern slot machine, the man who is given all the credit is Charles Fey, a German Immigrant mechanic who lived in San Francisco in 1989. He designed and built the 5¢ Liberty Bell slot machine. Fey rented his machines to saloons on a 50-50 split in an attempt to keep his invention secret. Although his venture turned out to be very profitable, his secret didn't last long. A Chicago business man named Herbert Mills obtained one of Fey's machines, made some changes, and within 5 years had marketed his own machines all across America. It was Mills who came up with the symbols that have become the standards for slot machines for the world over. The lemon, plum, cherry, and bar symbols the he designed are still in use today!
